Hello everyone,
For this update I'm both proud to share a lot of excellent strides we made in December, but also saddened to share some distressing news from the storms in Jan.
For December we worked with CityTeam each Saturday of the month at the Tully Rd Encampments by serving 100 meals prepared by their Hope on Wheels truck. Rain or shine, we were there.
Even on Christmas eve, members of San Jose Christian Alliance Church rallied to collect supplies for the homeless and made soup for those in the Tully Road Encampments
Additionally, to the Tully Road Encampments on Dec 17th Geraldine helped arrange a multi organizational event at the encampments at Felipe Road and Story Road where hundreds of blankets and other supplies were collected and distributed.
Following this, Geraldine connected with CityTeam to arrange a visit from the Hope on Wheels truck to this area sometime in January.
On top of these two encampments we made our monthly visit to the encampments behind the Evergreen Branch Community Library on Dec 21st. There, we were able to serve about 30 people a warm cooked meal.
Sadly, even with all of the victories our effort has been bringing, Nature brings an even bigger challenge to the unhoused living in the Bay Area. On Saturday I was able to make it out to the Tully Rd Encampments with CityTeam just before the latest storm hit. Just along Coyote Creek there in a one block area were dozens of people who were displaced, some of which lost everything to the rushing water.
I connected with some of those who were displaced and they shared with me there is a need for blankets and flashlights. I will be following up with those I connected with for those needs, but needs like this are spread throughout the entire region. Flooding along The Guadalupe River is much worse than Coyote Creek. I am reaching out to everyone I can in this email to share this dire need among the unhoussed population, and I will continue to spread the word as much as I can, and I'm asking if you could please do the same.
